Charlie Wadhams is the first musician I've gone out to see who I've found out about solely through MySpace. And let me tell you - all the spam, annoying ads, and gross guys messaging me asking, "WHATCHOU ABOUT?" was made worthwhile by this show. Wadhams is a good performer, great vocalist, and his melodies and lyrics are lovely. I had to track him down after the show to get a CD as he kind of forgot to start selling them, and when I finally found him he was really nice.
This was also my first time at Bordello, the hipster venue where he performed. Well, kind of my first time. I had actually gone once 2 years ago, back when it was called Little Pedro's, and I realized this once I was within a block of Bordello. The night I was there back in 2005, Very Be Careful was playing some awesome cumbia in front of brightly colored lights, it was a weeknight, I was tired, I wanted to leave and yet I wanted to stay, too.
But, last night was different, and I was in a much better mood. The space has changed quite a bit since I was there last - it seems more like you've stepped on to the set for a 19th century bordello from a Technicolor 1950s movie, rather than a 1970s mexican dive bar/restaurant with character. The staff is quite nice - the bouncer was gracious, and remembered my name and that of my sister's as we left the bar. The bartenders, who were all cute women when I was there last night, wear black corsets with fishnet stockings, and are gracious to everyone - even the shady men who looked these brave women over 20 times as they turned away to ring said sleazy patrons up. The occasional gross man aside, the crowd was pretty nice, and I didn't get too much of a snotty vibe - most everyone was there for the music, and I saw mainly smiling, warm faces instead of jerk-face hipsters.
I left the show with a great CD in my hot little hands and the desire to return to Bordello for more good shows. And I hope to see another Wadhams performance soon.
